Yahoo Finance’s Brian Cheung breaks down the chart of the day.
Video Transcript
BRIAN CHEUNG: All right, time now for our chart of the day. We’re going to take a look at the crypto space staying there. And we want to talk about NFTs, specifically those Bored Apes that you’ve seen, part of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. The price of these have shot higher over the last year. In fact, right now, these images are going for about 110 Ether. That’s the y-axis here. That’s about $333,000 US at the moment. We know that they’re planning a Metaverse, but get this– Coinbase apparently going to produce not one, not two, but three films based off of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.
And Akiko, you can feel however you want to feel about NFTs or Bored Apes specifically, but maybe this is just part of the broader trend for these financial stories getting turned into live action. I mean, what, there’s so many movies and TV shows now about some of these big narratives that have been catching the eye and the likes of Yahoo Finance, honestly.
AKIKO FUJITA: Yeah, this feels pretty consistent with the brand, though, right? When you think about number one, not necessarily that it’s a trilogy, but how it’s involving the NFT community to shape what this film is going to look like, you know, number one, we’re hearing that those are going to have a say in the plot of the film. You can submit potential characters that could be considered by real life Hollywood casting directors. So I’m not necessarily opposed to that. I’m still thinking about that price that you just mentioned, though. 300– did you say $330,000?
BRIAN CHEUNG: $333,000 US– in fiat, of course. You know, it’s only 110 Ether, so. I don’t have that many. If I did, I’m saving it for a space flight anyway. For your space flight.
AKIKO FUJITA: I– I’m all for it. I’m all for it. Better to have the space flight than–
BRIAN CHEUNG: I can’t even think of, though, like–
AKIKO FUJITA: I don’t know. I like experience.
BRIAN CHEUNG: A movie trilogy, though? Like, what was the last trilogy that I’ve seen that I actually thought was, like, good? “Lord of the Rings,” honestly. Because the “Star Wars”– the latest “Star Wars” ones really stunk. Ugh.
AKIKO FUJITA: I have not watched. I’m trying to think of the last trilogy I watched. I did not watch the “Star Wars” trilogy.
BRIAN CHEUNG: I feel like it’s not a thing anymore. You know, like, ever since the era of, like, the “Harry Potter” films and the–
AKIKO FUJITA: It brings people to the theater. I’m not sure we’re the demographic, but if you look at the box office, I mean, just look at ticket sales, it does bring the crowd out at a time when we’re talking about what’s going to bring people to theaters. I mean, those trilogies do well, right?
BRIAN CHEUNG: Yeah, we’ll see. Again, I don’t know when these movies are going to get made, but we will see what’s going on, on that front. But maybe–
AKIKO FUJITA: I’m watching. I’m going to watch them.
BRIAN CHEUNG: –team outing. Team outing, team outing. We’ll all go see the Bored Ape Yacht Club films, all three of them.
