The Indianapolis Police Department released more information late Sunday about the shooting involving a sheriff’s deputy in Broad Ripple.
William Manery, 30, was shot by a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6300 block of Westfield Boulevard.
The sheriff’s office received information from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee indicating Manery was in the 6300 block of Westfield Boulevard.
“Preliminary information included that Manery had open out-of-state warrants and was possibly armed and dangerous,” IMPD reported in a news release. A weapon was not located during their investigation, IMPD reported.

Those warrants included flight to avoid in Rutherford County and vehicular aggravated assault in Bedford County, both in Tennessee. He also had a stolen vehicle warrant out of Aiken County, South Carolina, IMPD said.
Deputies located a white Jeep Cherokee parked in front of 6311 Westfield Boulevard and approached to find Manery, the only occupant in the vehicle, asleep in the driver’s seat.
Deputies ordered Manery out of the vehicle. Police said he instead turned the vehicle on and reversed it into a marked police vehicle, struck a curb in the parking lot, and then drove forward and struck a parked, unmarked, unoccupied sheriff’s office vehicle, according to the news release.
As deputies ran toward the Jeep Cherokee, a deputy fired their weapon striking Manery multiple times. The deputies involved have not been identified by officials.
Deputies then rendered first aid. Manery was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in serious but stable condition. On Sunday night he was reported in good condition and is expected to survive his injuries, IMPD said.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
Deputies were not equipped with body-worn cameras or in-car dash cameras. IMPD officers responding to the scene were wearing body-worn cameras and the cameras were activated as they arrived on scene.
IMPD is handling the criminal investigation at the request of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office will conduct an internal administrative investigation. The deputy was placed on administrative leave, which is standard in cases involving law enforcement shootings.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is engaged with the ongoing criminal investigation. Facts and evidence gathered will be presented to prosecutors for review and a charging decision, the IMPD release stated.
